Netflix's PR Win/Fail Monday
Netflix continues to entertain, though not for the reasons the business is designed to. It's only 11 am MST and the company has already had big PR peaks and valleys to start the week. First, in an effort to address the public backlash brought on by Netflix recent pricing change, the company issued a well-crafted mea culpa by the CEO, Reed Hastings, taking credit for the misguided pricing strategy and explaining how and why he arrived at the decision he did. He then used the apology as a launching pad to announce the rebranding of its DVD delivery service, now called Qwikster. This was the PR Win part of the morning. Jason is perhaps not Netfix's pick for the ideal personification or spokesperson for the newly launched Qwikster service. It is too soon to determine if @Qwikster Jason will leverage his new-found fame (1,500 new followers this morning) for book and movie deals, or treat @Qwikster as the winning lottery ticket and cash in on how quickly Netflix needs/wants this to go away, but we do know that this item of interest will be included in all coverage surrounding Netflix's announcement of Qwikster. A painful reminder that when launching a business, or making news, that URLs, all URLs, matter.
Soon thereafter, word got out that perhaps Netflix/Qwikster may have been a little too quick to make the new service announcement, as it was discovered that the @Qwikster Twitter account is apparently not the official Twitter feed for the new service, but the personal account of a week-smoking Elmo, aka Jason Castillo.
